ABOUT M.A.P.

Documenting the future of marine autonomy

Designated the UK’s National Centre for Marine Autonomy, Plymouth brings together industry, research, defence and world-class facilities to advance autonomous maritime systems.

M.A.P. is an independent media platform dedicated to documenting the people, organisations and technologies shaping this fast-growing sector. Produced in Plymouth, it brings together founders, engineers, researchers, operators, investors and policymakers for informed conversations about the technical, commercial and strategic developments driving marine autonomy.

Each episode captures the sector’s progress while giving participating organisations a high-quality media asset for recruitment, marketing, stakeholder engagement and investor communications.

PRESENTER

Presented by Professor Matthew Palmer

Professor of Marine Autonomy and Environmental Intelligence, University of Plymouth

Matthew brings more than two decades of experience across marine science, environmental intelligence and autonomous systems.

His work has included persistent ocean autonomy, AI-enabled Digital Twins of the Ocean, environmental monitoring, offshore energy and defence applications.

Before joining the University of Plymouth, Matthew was part of the senior leadership team at Plymouth Marine Laboratory and previously served as Chief Scientist of the UK Marine Autonomous & Robotic Systems facility.

His experience enables M.A.P. to explore both the technical detail behind new capabilities and the wider questions surrounding their deployment, adoption and future impact.

PRODUCTION

Produced by The Hundred Hands

M.A.P. is produced by The Hundred Hands, an independent Plymouth production company specialising in documentary filmmaking, podcasts and digital storytelling for organisations with complex stories to tell.

Founder Drew Graves is a filmmaker and marine autonomy specialist with more than three years’ experience working directly across the sector. His work has included sea trials, defence projects, maritime research, autonomous systems and subsurface operations, giving him a practical understanding of the technology, terminology and commercial landscape.

This experience shapes every episode, allowing conversations to move beyond general talking points and explore the engineering challenges, real-world deployment, commercialisation and future capabilities behind marine autonomous systems.

Each episode is recorded at The Hundred Hands’ dedicated studio overlooking the River Plym, using a purpose-built multi-camera set designed for professional, long-form conversations.
