Intro

Rue is one of the South West’s most exciting new voices, blending jazz, soul, and songwriting craft into a magnetic live and recorded presence. In August 2024, she released On The Fence, her on-screen debut, supported by BBC Introducing and playlisted on Spotify Jazz UK and Fresh Finds. Paenji Productions (Charlotte Meling and Billy Abbott) commissioned The Hundred Hands to support the film, bringing in Drew Graves as camera operator, Kieran Daykin as photographer, and Oli Dickinson of Different View as drone pilot.

Objective

To create a cinematic music video that matched Rue’s unique sound and bold artistic direction. The aim was to capture both her individuality as a performer and the atmosphere of her music, translating her live energy into a carefully crafted visual story.

Challenge

Filming took place across two striking locations: a country house and garden rich with foliage and texture, and Tregantle Beach at sunset. The beach scenes required placing Rue and a chair in the water, balancing the tides, light, and performance in a way that would feel effortless on screen. Capturing the intimacy of the house setting and the vast openness of the beach in a single piece demanded careful camerawork and creative coordination.

Result

The final film moves between lush greenery and the drama of the Cornish coast, culminating in a chair-in-the-sea sequence shot against a stunning sunset. Released alongside the single, the video gained national airplay on BBC Radio 3’s Round Midnight with Soweto Kinch and strong streaming support on Spotify playlists. The collaboration produced a cinematic debut that not only showcased Rue’s artistry but also celebrated the power of South West creatives working together.
